How EV Charging Cost is Calculated

The exact cost of charging an electric vehicle depends on the battery energy required (kWh) and your electricity provider's tariff per unit.

Formula:
Energy Required (kWh) = Battery Capacity × (Target % - Start %)
Charging Cost (₹) = Energy Required × Tariff (₹/kWh) × Efficiency Factor (1.1)

Efficiency Factor: Approximately 10% of electrical energy is naturally dissipated during transmission and AC-to-DC rectification as thermal loss. Our calculator automatically factors this in for accurate real-world bills.

How Charging Time is Calculated

Charging duration is governed by the bottleneck between the charger's peak output (kW) and the vehicle's maximum allowable acceptance rate.

Formula:
Charging Time (Hours) = Energy Added (kWh) ÷ (Charger Output kW × Efficiency)

DC Tapering Curve: DC fast chargers slow down power delivery after 80% State of Charge (SoC) to safeguard lithium-ion cells against overheating and dendrite formation. The calculator accounts for this reduced taper speed from 80% to 100%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a unit of EV charging electricity in India?
1 electricity unit equals 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh). If your electric vehicle has a 30 kWh battery and charges from 0% to 100%, it consumes approximately 33 units (including transmission losses).
Why does charging slow down after 80% on DC fast chargers?
Lithium-ion batteries accept rapid current easily when discharged. Beyond 80%, internal resistance and temperature increase, so the battery management system (BMS) tapers charging current to preserve battery health.
Can I charge my EV using a standard 15A home socket?
Yes, most EVs include an emergency slow charger (3.3 kW) that connects to a dedicated, properly earthed 15A/16A wall socket. Full charge takes between 10 to 18 hours depending on battery size.
How can I reduce my EV charging costs at home?
Apply for a dedicated EV meter with subsidized Time-of-Day (ToD) tariffs from your local DISCOM, charge during overnight off-peak hours (11 PM - 6 AM), or connect your home wallbox to rooftop solar panels.
